Daniel Quinn’s award winning novel is a deep, thoughtful overview of the world and the humans living in this world. It is the story of a young man in search of a teacher. The entire novel is in a first person narrative making it more personal as if Ishmael is actually talking to the reader, teaching the reader. The young man finds his teacher through an ad, which says:
"Teacher seeks pupil. Must have an earnest desire to save the world. Apply in person." (P.4)
Reading this ad makes him explode as can be gauged from Quinn’s description of his reaction:
… I choked and cursed and spat and threw the paper to the floor. Since even that didn’t seem to be quite enough, I snatched it up, marched into the kitchen, and shoved it into the trash. (p. 3)
This outrageous reaction is because the same man had ages ago given an ad in the newspaper looking for a teacher but had never found one:
… Someone out there with an unknown wisdom who could dispel my disillusionment and bewilderment: a teacher. (p. 5)
When he saw this ad, he thought that......
