�Hamlet,� by William Shakespeare, is one of the most well known and influential plays of all time. Shakespeare displays his mastery of characterization through his portrayal of the character Prince Hamlet. Hamlet�s personality is displayed through interaction with other characters in the play, showing his motives, values, and ideals. Prince Hamlet is an uneasy, melancholy, and vacillating character. He always doubts his decisions and ponders upon every situation. He had many chances to kill Claudius, but did not utilize them because of his downfall of analyzing every situation. For example, after the play which revealed Claudius� guilt, Hamlet had the perfect chance to kill him. �Now might I do it pat, now �a is a-praying; And now I�ll do�t. [He draws his sword.] And so �a goes to heaven, And so am I revenged. That would be scanned: A villain kills my father, and for that, I, his sole son, do this same villain send To heaven� (Shakespeare Act Three, Scene Three, Lines 73-78).
