Introduction
"What to the Slave is the Fourth of July" is a speech given by Mr. Douglass to the Rochester Ladies' Anti-Slavery Society on July 5, 1852.
Frederick Douglass
Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey was born into slavery in February 1817 in Talbot County on the Eastern Shore of Maryland to Harriet Bailey, a slave who had some Indian blood. His father was an unknown white man. As a child, Frederick experienced neglect, cruelty, and hard work. He was an intelligent and ambitious person caught in the tyrannical and "perpetual unpaid toil" of slavery.
Frederick Augustus Bailey, commonly known as Frederick Douglass was born a slave in Talbot County, Maryland. His mother Harriet Bailey was a slave and Frederick also became a slave as by law, children followed the status of their mothers. He was separated from his mother at an early age and was raised with a group of slave children. At the age of eight, he was sent to the custody of Hugh and Sophia Auld. Here......
