William Shakespeare's classic tragedy, Hamlet, has captured and fascinated audiences for centuries, and has been re-told and re-interpreted in almost as many ways. The modern day film version, directed by Michael Almereyda and starring Ethan Hawke in the title role, is yet another adaptation of this timeless tale. Although this version does stray from its original Elizabethan setting, it is indeed a �condensed second original� and rather than perverting Shakespeare's masterpiece, Almereyda re-tells it to a modern audience. This version, however, caters to an audience that demands visual representation of plot, so in order to truly tell Hamlet�s story, Almereyda utilizes color, particularly red and blue, to create symbolism and bring the play to life. When simply reading a play, the reader must interpret and analyze the text to create images that will help him �see� the action of the plot, whereas in a movie, imagery is a common device used to create symbolism.
