Eating Disorder In the United Stated today, a severe disease is affecting three out of ten women ages seventeen through thirty-five. This disease which still poses many questions are known as Anorexia Nervosa. Anorexia Nervosa is a condition involving fear of gaining weight, which leads to excessive weight loss from restricted food intake and exercise. It occurs chiefly during adolescence, especially in young women, and may lead to death by starvation, abnormalities in the menstrual cycle, and increases susceptibility to infection. No standard therapy for anorexia nervosa exits. Psychotherapy often helps, and many cases resolve themselves without relapses (encarta). From a biological point of view one is particularly fascinated by the several metabolic and hormonal disturbances in anorexia nervosa, but the question remains unanswered whether the established physiological disturbances are the cause of the consequences of the disorder.
