Mental effects of war: a lifelong suffering Some men make it out of war physically intact, but not mentally unaltered. In the novel, All Quiet on the Western Front , written by German author Erich Maria Remarque a soldier by the name of Paul Baumer experiences the terrors of war which eventually presented many psychological effects. Paul experiences psychological effects such as isolation towards his family and society, forced maturity, and indifference towards death. World War I caused dramatic psychological conditions which isolated Paul from his family and finds himself only being able to relate to his fellow comrades. Paul Baumer finds himself to be severely isolated from society after he visits his home and says, “ I ought never to have come on leave”(Remarque 185). Paul Baumer finds it hard to relate to his family members and society because of all the horrors he witnessed in the war. The average citizen usually has never glimpsed the horrors of war; therefore, Paul’s family could not understand his feelings and state of mind. Paul realizes that his family can no......
