Edouard Manet’s Olympia When Edouard Manet’s painting, Olympia, was hung in the Salon of Paris in 1865, it was met with laughter, criticism, and disdain. It was attacked by the public, the critics, and the newspapers. Guards had to be stationed next to it to protect it, until it was moved to a spot high above a doorway, out of reach (Brombert, 115). “Shocking” was the word used to describe Manet’s masterpiece when it was first unveiled in Paris. It was perhaps the most famous nude of the nineteenth-century. The woman in the piece was unlike any naked lady who had ever gone before. She was not a goddess or an angel or a shy girl caught of guard. She was a contemporary woman and her name was Victorine Meurent, she was Manet’s longtime model, companion and the subject of many of his works.
