Chekhov is one of Russia's many important literary figures, and one of the greatest playwrights of modern times. He won the Pushkin Prize and he is known for his short stories and his plays, works which often combine elements of both comedy and tragedy. An example of a comedic play is �A Marriage Proposal�. This one-act play takes a humorous look at the tendency for wealthy families to seek other wealthy families and encourage marriages that serve primarily economic purposes. Since the audience of that time liked plays that had comedy or had a farce theme to them, Chekhov decided to write this play. The few reasons for which he wrote the play are, firstly to give the audience a play that would make them laugh and would not bore them. Secondly he wrote this play in this manner because he wanted it to have a message to it, rather then just amusing the audience. Finally, he uses techniques like indirect comments to ensure that the audience gets the message he wants to convey without getting them angry or disappointed.
