Thoreau, A Spartan Only At Heart Dennis Yosco 3-22 05/12/05 Henry David Thoreau was a trancendentalist in the mid to late 1800s. He once said �I wanted to live deep and suck at all the marrow of life, to live sturdily amd spartan like��(Thoreau,237) What this meant was he wanted to live off the land and himself, just as the spartans did. From the time when the spartan kids were born till they died, they lived a life of military training. They were taught to never cry, to never show fear, and to be strongest soliders they could be. As noble as the spartans were, Thoreau would probably have disliked some aspects of their culture. A young spartan child lives with his or her parents up to the age of 7. At this age, they are taken away to a type of military school. The boys are taken from their parents to a harsh military school. At this school, they are taught all they need to live a life of self reliance.
