Erie Canal Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The completion of the Erie Canal on October 26, 1825 (1), was one of New York’s greatest achievements in the 1800s. As with most grand plans the canal was at first scorned and ridiculed (2). However, as time went on the canal became very important and successful to New York state. The one man who had much faith in the canal project was Dewitt Clinton of New York (3). Clinton was an influential political leader, who has served as state assemblyman, United States senator, and mayor and New York City. He’s the person who influenced the state legislature to create a canal commission in 1810 (4). Creating this canal commission and everything else he did for the creation of the canal he was elected governor of New York in 1817 (5). In order the open the country west of the Appalachian mountains to settlers, and to offer a cheap and safe way to carry produce to a market, in 1808 Dewitt Clinton proposed the construction of the canal (6).
