The discussion on the effects of globalization in the rural regions of the United States focuses mainly on agriculture. It generally refers to policies that support international deals that serve the best interests of corporate agribusiness. These policies are created in the boardrooms of companies motivated by profit and not the economic survival of independent farmers, the health of the consumer or the strength of the rural community. Globalization means policies in the United States that force our agriculture prices as low as possible and force the world price to levels that are unsustainable for farmers around the world. Growing up in a town with a population of less than 1,200, it would be safe for me to declare that I grew up in a rural community. It is also a safe assumption to say that without the agricultural industry, my town and surrounding regions would easily go bankrupt.
