In 1980, Mary Catherine Swanson founded the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program in San Diego, California, under the assumption that disadvantaged students were falling behind because they were not given the support they needed to succeed. AVID is not designed for the lowest performing students but rather for the students that get lost in the middle; seemingly overlooked while their potential is ignored. The program keys in on students with a disadvantaged background, which possess the potential to become high achieving students. These students in the AVID program are enrolled in rigorous curriculum while concurrently taking an AVID elective class, where they receive academic support such as tutoring, social skills training, note taking, test taking preparation, reading for comprehension skills, writing skills and other college preparation skills.
