The Endangered Species Act was passed in 1973 by congress. This act was one of dozens of environmental laws passed in the 1970�s in the United States. Congress passed its first legislation to protect endangered species in 1966 and expanded the laws again in 1969. The 1973 legislation, however, had much stronger provisions for the protection of endangered species. It is a program that is all about the conservation of the threatened and the endangered animals and plants, the habitats in which all of these plants and animals are found. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service Department, along with the Department of the Interior, maintains a list of about six hundred and thirty two endangered species, in which three hundred and twenty six are plants, and about a hundred and ninety threatened species, of which seventy eight are plants. Some of these species include birds, insects, reptiles, fish, mammals, crustaceans, flowers, trees, and grasses.
