The Mental Scars of War (How does Post traumatic Stress Disorder affect returning Middle East soldiers, compared to the soldiers who returned home from the Vietnam war?) Post traumatic stress disorder, and the effects of PTSD are a big part of returning war veterans these days, presently from soldiers who are returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan in the middle east. But PTSD has also taken its toll on past soldiers as well, such as the men and women who fought in the Vietnam war. Post traumatic stress disorder was first acknowledged in 1980, by the �American Psychiatric association.� ( Foa 16) It was then installed as the third classification of mental disorders. There are three groups that are used to conduct the timing of PSTD, (acute) symptoms lasting longer than a month. (Chronic) symptoms lasting over 3 months and (delayed) symptoms appearing later sometimes months or years (Foa,16).
