David Honig Discussion of The Motif Of Finding Riches In The Jungle The American dream, in literary works, is often portrayed as an unattainable quest, the quest for money as a way to fulfillment. Ironically, chasing a dream rarely brings fulfillment. Miller specifically points at the lunacy of such pretensions. Miller uses the motif of Ben’s story, with the motifs of the jungle and its riches, to illustrate the theme of the “American dream” to which Willy was striving for. Writers sometime use motifs to remind the reader of a particular social theme that the writing deals with. Arthur Miller does this very eloquently in the play death of a salesman. Of the many motifs that the play the death of a salesman exhibits, the most compelling motifs is Ben’s story of becoming rich in the jungle. This motif is made of two symbols; The Jungle is a motif that symbolizes Willy’s (and also Miller’s) view of American society, a way of life, a place that is hard to survive in, dangerous, and mostly, unknown.
