Oedipus Rex: To See or not to See Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Oedipus Rex: To see or Not to See The play Oedipus the King, by Sophocles, is a shining example of dramatic irony, especially when dealing with sight, or the lack thereof. It’s frequent references to eyes and sight prove to be more than literal, and take us on a journey into the mind of Oedipus, a King that is not only blind to the truth, but eventually ends up literally blind. Oedipus, in the beginning of the play, can see perfectly with his physical eyes, has been gifted with excellent perception, being the only one who could ‘see’ the answer to the sphinx’s riddle, but is totally blind to his past and his personality flaws. Since Thebes is under a terrible curse, he seeks to ‘see’ the truth, almost desperately, which is shown by his sending Creon to consult with Apollo’s (the god of enlightenment and the sun) oracle and having Apollo’s chief prophet, Teiresias brought in to help with the mystery, but is apparently incapable at this point. Ironically, the one who can see the King for what he is, is a blind man, Teiresias the prophet. Teiresias is physically blind, yet can ‘see’......
