The Ending of The Awakening Suicide or not? For many people the ending of Kate Chopin�s novel The Awakening is hard to understand, because it is not explicitly said if Edna, the protagonist, commits suicide or just accidentally drowns, because she overestimated her power. But as most people, who occupy themselves with this topic, I have no doubt about it being suicide, since Edna is in a real desperate situation, when she goes down to the shore: She left her husband, lost her lover and does not know how to live on. The only way for her to save her essential self and get out of this dilemma without giving up her independence is to commit suicide. By describing some alternative options, which Edna could have chosen instead of killing herself, I will show that there are no real satisfying possibilities for her. One possible option for her would be going back to her husband and lead the same life she had lead before her �awakening�. But that is the exact opposite of what she desires. By doing so she would have to accept the dictation of society again that tells her how and what to b......
