Calligraphy is the zenith of eastern Asian art. According to Chinese tradition, a beautiful character can move a person for a lifetime, and can become a source of prosperity and happiness. However, no matter how prettily a mean word is decorated, it will never become lovely or lucky. The Chinese character for the word female is ¡°Å® ¡°. When combined with the character for son, it forms the word good ¡°ºÃ¡±, and when used with the character for housework, forms the term ¡°woman¡±. Through this, the old mantras of sexist thinking are preserved in contemporary China, serving as a link to the old mistakes of the past. However, this link is so carefully concealed, like a spider-web invisible to the eyes of the fly that it traps, that so many Chinese women have made the mistake of assuming equality, when they were in fact floundering in the spider¡¯s web.
