INTRODUCTION
La Celestina, a tragicomic drama written about 1499, joins medieval elegiac comedy to the classical tragedy that was enjoying renewed interest in Renaissance Europe. The protagonist is Celestina, alternately a procuress, a facilitator of assignations, a sorceress and a witch. The principal tragic victims are the would-be lovers, Calisto and Melibea, both of whom die--the first by accident, the second by design--toward the end of the play.
The playwright was Fernando de Rojas (ca. 1474-1541), a successful Burgos lawyer and likely from a family of maranos, or converted Jews.
