[Synopsis: This report, 4 pages in length, relying on 4 sources and in MLA format, examines the late 15th century romantic tragedy Celestina. It analyzes the death of one of the characters, Calisto, in the context of prevailing conceptions of love and sin.] Symbolism in Celestina: the death of Calisto INTRODUCTION La Celestina, a tragicomic drama written about 1499, joins medieval elegiac comedy to the classical tragedy that was enjoying renewed interest in Renaissance Europe. The protagonist is Celestina, alternately a procuress, a facilitator of assignations, a sorceress and a witch. The principal tragic victims are the would-be lovers, Calisto and Melibea, both of whom die--the first by accident, the second by design--toward the end of the play. The playwright was Fernando de Rojas (ca. 1474-1541), a successful Burgos lawyer and likely from a family of maranos, or converted Jews. Evidently, Rojas came upon a manuscript containing the first one or two acts of the play and used them to complete the 21-act drama. Celestina can be understood as satire, tragedy, e......
