The Aesthetic Movement in Literature
The subject of aesthetics was formally distinguished as an independent philosophical practice, in the 18th century, by German philosophers Immanuel Kant and Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten. The word aesthetic was derived from the German word ästhetisch and the French esthétique, (both spawned from the Greek word αισθητικός, meaning a perceiver or sensitive) and mainly aided Immanuel Kant’s translations; it meant “the science which treats of the conditions of sensuous perception.” Elsewhere Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten had translated the word to mean “criticism of taste.” Despite Kant’s attempts to correct Baumgarten it was his translation that survived. Thus, Baumgarten is credited with inventing the use of the term.
