Australia�s political framework comprises federalism and responsible government. Are these components compatible? Explain. Since 1901 Australia�s political system has combined federalism, based on America�s federal system, with Britain�s Westminster system, incorporating the accepted convention of responsible government . These distinct influences may be reason why the marriage between federalism and responsible government does not exist without conflict . When �compatible� is defined as being �capable of existing together in harmony� , Australia�s political framework does not wholly comply. Yet, the amalgamation of these two distinct systems has, for one hundred years, facilitated the effective operation of liberal democracy in Australia. In seeking to clarify these components, weaknesses in the partnership are exposed.
