The gentrification process happens in many cities throughout the world. It is usually found in cities that are undergoing dramatic change. These cities will often have characteristics that are common to all “Global Cities”. This will include them being financial centers and headquarters for major firms, particularly in the high tech and communications field. There is usually a high influx of immigrants into the city. Another trait of the “Global City” is the academic learning institutes that are in close proximity to the city.
Cities have typically been deeply rooted in regional economies. Most still are, but global cities tend to disconnect themselves from their regions. This conflicts with a key suggestion in traditional economic study: that urban systems promote regional and national integration.
