Hamlet: Sane or Insane, That is the Question In the drama, Hamlet, the main character is faced with the responsibility of attaining vengeance for his father�s murder. As the play progresses, Hamlet apparently goes insane and his portrayal of a madman becomes increasingly believable, with the characters around him reacting accordingly. However, through his own admissions, his clever speech and his inconsistent madness, it is clear that he is simply acting insane to fulfill the request of revenge by his father and to vent his anger towards certain characters without penalty. In this classic example of the �wild and whirling words (1.5)� that Hamlet uses to persuade people that he is mad, he proves that beneath his self-confessed �antic disposition (1.5)�, Hamlet is very sane. When he talks to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, not only does Hamlet realize their true purpose for visiting, he tells them he�s not really mad, yet in a cryptic manner that would be considered insane. �I am but mad north-north-west.
