History Essay Assess the view that, in the years 1901-1914, Australia was a ‘workingman’s paradise.’ Word Length- 1178 Australia was a ‘working man’s paradise’ in the years 1901-1914 in terms of the working conditions, wages and abundance of jobs on offer, however only for men of a European descent. The lifestyle of Australians in this time was of the highest standard in the world, with multitudes of leisure activities for the public to enjoy and housing that, whilst it was rundown and shanty for most of the working population, was a benchmark to Australia’s counterparts. Australia sought to abolish the segregation of social classes and make for an egalitarian society by introducing a basic wage and standardised working hours but left out women, non-white immigrants and Aboriginals in these rights. A policy was adopted to encourage hard work for white males and also support the eradication of foreigners and Aboriginals in the workplace. Australia became a paradise of freedom, work and economy only for those who fitted the mould shaped out by society in the years......
