Osteogenesis Imperfecta, also referred to as the “Brittle Bone Disease”, is a devastating condition that plagues over 1 in 20,000 births. (Solomon) A person with this condition can have multiple fractures from the slightest of traumas. (Antoniazzi) There is no cure. This condition is a genetic disorder affecting type 1 collagen. Collagen is the essential protein for support and strength in bones, joints, and other connective tissues. An estimated 50,000 Americans have this disease. Tracing the origins of this disease is difficult, but the first known record of Osteogenesis is of an infant from 1000 B.C. in Egypt. This infant was found and recorded by PHK Gray in 1969.
