Claes Oldenburg - pop art Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In Claes Oldenburg’s essay “I am for an art…” he summarises what he thinks art should be, in over a hundred demands each starting with “I am for an art…” He writes that anything and everything should and can be art. Explaining that in the society he lived in art is only for the bourgeois. Oldenburg wishes, in his writing for this to be different. One of the first points on his list, “I am for an art that grows up not knowing it is art at all, an art given the chance of having a starting point at zero.” Is a good overview of the whole piece of writing. Claes Oldenburg, son of a Swedish diplomat was born in Stockholm and moved to New York with his family at a very early age. During his literature degree at Yale University he worked as a children’s book illustrator, before moving to the Chicago institute of art. He then moved to New York and joined a group of young abstract Expressionists who propelled him into the public artistic eye. His work centered around America’s pop culture and the mass media.
