Troy: Evidence from Schliemann versus Korfmann Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Troy: a legendary city and scene of the Trojan War, part of which is described in Homer’s Iliad. Heinrich Schliemann began his excavations in search of this mythical location in 1870. More than a century later, the site was re-excavated by a professor by the name of Manfred Korfmann, of the University of Tubingen in Germany. His conclusions have sent waves of dissension through the archaeological world. A fellow colleague at the Tubingen University, Frank Kolb, is a firm non-believer of Korfmann’s views and has attacked him through newspaper interviews and in several publications. The golden rule in archaeology is simple: no evidence, no story. With that said, I believe that Manfred Korfmann deserved the amount of criticism he received, due to the fact that he interpreted his own deductions in a manner that is unacceptable in the studies of archaeology.
