Macbeth is essentially a male play with few dominant female characters.
Shakespeare lived in an era where women possessed few political and private rights. This was especially the case with married women who, under English Law, had no political power whatsoever. The play reflects aspects of this world but also challenges the very basis of its foundations with the use of characters such as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. In this way, the playt reproduces a different kind of reality.
Shakespeare pays much regard as to what it is to be a man and to possess masculine characteristics. The main prerequisite for this manliness is essentially to be fearless and to have fighting prowess. Macbeth's masculinity is recognized and defined by himself and by other influential people around him. If this manliness is to be questioned, it is not to be done on the battlefield and there are many references to men being praised for their ability to fight with the focus of Act 1 Scene 2 being on the men’s performance in battle......
