Poor protection for India's consumers By SajaN Madrau MUMBAI - "You are protected under the Consumer Protection Act of 1986, against defective goods and deficient services," the Mumbai-based International Consumer Rights Protection Council (ICRPC) website tells visitors. "You were a target of corruption, and were cheated by manufacturers and their dealers, and you did not know what to do." An average of 6,000 victims contact the ICRPC monthly, wanting to know how to hit back at such cheating manufacturers, dealers and service providers. But few such ports of call serve the hundreds of millions of consumers in India, leaving a glaring gap in a healthy economy. Added consumer woes come for Indians in the form of legal delays, with more than 300,000 cases pending. For instance, the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRF), one of the five-odd consumer redressal government forums, had 78 cases listed in two courts in New Delhi for November 8.
