Benito Mussolini, a prominent figure in Fascist history, became the youngest prime minister of Italy in October 1922. From the year of 1922 till 1930, Mussolini tried to consolidate and strengthen the Fascist State to make it the dominant regime in Italy. In many ways he succeeded, which can be seen because until 1943 he was Italy’s leader. This meant that he had control over the country for over 20 years. His consolidation of the Fascist state began in 1922, when in August there was a general strike called by the socialists. This gave the Mussolini’s Squadristi an opportunity to present themselves as the Italy’s only force of protection as they were ready for the strike while the current liberal regime were not. The strike was put down with 24 hours and it created the impression that the nation had been saved due to the Squadristi and this glorified Mussolini and the Fascists. On 28 October, Mussolini led the Blackshirt leaders in what was called, The March on Rome. The 26, 000 Fascists were facing the regular army and success did not seem likely.
