Slimness in Modern Art Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Examine how the ideal of slimness has been dealt with in the work of one or more artist of your own choice. In today’s society body image and the way people look plays a big part in out social interactions. This has influenced many modern artists, including Jenny Saville a contemporary British painter whose self-portraits give us an understanding of how she sees her own body. Other artists I have looked at are Barbara Kruger because of her straight forward look at society and also Allen Jones, a well known pop artist from the nineteen sixties, who had a fascination with women’s bodies. Jenny Saville attended the Glasgow School of Art in the late 80’s where she found only one female painting tutor in the staff. It was at this time that she became more interested in feminist literature, and this can be seen in some of her earlier works. Her oil paintings are of large nude women and show a definite association with a male dominated art history. In her works she merged this feminist writing and image to form an oil painting entitled “Propped” of 1992. In this work an oversized nud......
