Julius Caesar-The Role of Women Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Women may not play many roles in Julius Caesar, but the roles they do play are very important. There are only two women in the play, Portia, wife of Brutus, and Calpurnia, wife of Caesar. Portia and Calpurnia bring out the more personal side of Caesar and Brutus. They bring out love and loyalty in this play that is full of death and destruction. The two women also play a huge role in the foreshadowing of Caesar death which is very important. Three scenes in particular point out ways that women were looked at and how they attribute to the play. At the festival of Lupercal, Caesar refers to a superstition that if a sterile woman is touched by a racer, she will become fertile. "Stand you directly in Antonius' way when he doth run his course" (1, 1, 3-4). Caesar says this to Calpurnia refering to the fact that they can have no children. He believes Calpurnia is to blame for this. "Forget not in your speed, Antonius, To touch Calpurnia; for our elders say the barren, touched in this holy chase, shake off their sterile curse."
