Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis: Miracle or Monster? An exciting and relatively new technology called preimplantation genetic diagnosis, or PGD, is a way for couples to detect genetic defects such as disease causing mutations and chromosomal abnormalities before a pregnancy is even confirmed (S. Chen). By detecting a wide range of genetic diseases in human in-vitro fertilized embryos before the embryos are transferred to the mother�s womb, PGD provides a unique way of preventing certain hereditary disorders (Hasadsri). While this technology is making it possible for couples to detect whether or not they are transferring genes which would result in the transmission of a genetic disorder to their potential children, it is also showing to be a very effective treatment for women who suffer recurrent first trimester pregnancy miscarriages which are usually the result of chromosomal abnormalities (S.
