Year 10 Essay Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice Having observed the marriages around her, Elizabeth Bennet has clear ideas about a suitable marriage partner. On what basis does she reject two proposals and accept a third? Elizabeth Bennet is the central character in Pride and Prejudice, a 19th century novel about love, marriage and status, the events and characters are seen through her eyes. Miss Bennet has strong views on marriage and a suitable marriage partner, she develops these believes through the marriages she observes around her. Through the course of the novel Elizabeth is proposed to three times, the first two she rejects and the third she accepts. By looking at the three proposals the reader learns what Elizabeth considers a suitable marriage and the development of Elizabeth’s views of marriage. Elizabeth’s attitude towards relationships are very judgmental and wary, she is a strong, independent young lady and is not influenced by what other people think of her or what is expected of her by the society she lives in. ......
