Silent Spring by Rachel Carson About the author The author of the book Silent Spring, Rachel Carson, was not only a writer but also a scientist and ecologist, who grew up plainly in the rural river town of Springdale, Pennsylvania. In 1929, Carson graduated from Pennsylvania College for Women presently known as Chatham College. She studied at the Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory and she received her MA in zoology from Johns Hopkins University in 1932. The U.S. Bureau of Fisheries hired her as a writer for radio scripts. During the depression she supplemented her income writing featured articles on natural history for the Baltimore Sun. Furthermore, in 1936 Carson started her career in the federal service as a scientist and editor for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which later, due to her marvelous efforts and work, made her the Editor-in-Chief of all publications. She wrote pamphlets on conservation and natural resources and edited scientific articles. In her spare time she turned her government research into lyric prose.
