Discuss Trevor Griffiths' presentation of comedy in “Comedians”. How effective is this presentation? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In his play “Comedians”, Trevor Griffiths presents comedy in several different ways. He looks at it from a political point of view, explores comedy's role in everyday life and simply asks the question 'what makes us laugh?' The play is set in the mid 1970s when comedy was beginning to change. Comedy had previously been stereotypical of women and different races and was what we now call 'politically incorrect'. Bert Challenor, the agent, represents this type of comedy. Another type of comedy was evolving during the late 70s, which was known as 'Alternative'. This stand-up approach stayed away from racist and sexist jokes and they started to challenge their audiences (e.g. politically). It was a surreal way to do stand-up, as this new ironic outlook on life included not actually telling a specific joke - it was just looking at real life in a very satirical way and that is what we mainly know comedy to be today.
