The news that the USA was entering the war was the start of a long but successful victory for the allied forces. It would have been a huge blow to German morale. On April 17 1917, America did announce their joining the Allied side. The USA was the most powerful country in the world - both economically and militarily. Such a strength joining a fight against you would reduce very easily your hopes of victory. The Germans had panicked by the US's entry to the war, and this had partly motivated them to launch the Spring Offensive, even though it was a year later. Now, with the offensive grinding to a halt and without having provided a victory, the German morale would be crushed. On top of their seemingly endless supplies of men, they could use their vast resources to build weapons, munitions, tanks, artillery, planes, which could be shipped across the Atlantic to aid the inevitable Allied counter-offensive.
