There is an added interest in researching ancient women philosophers due to the fact that in those days women were generally considered vastly inferior to men- especially when it came to intellectual matters. It is clear that, nevertheless, there are some examples of very intelligent women who stood out in philosophical circles. One such example is Hypatia of Alexandria. This essay will look at Hypatia's life and accomplishments- and attempt to understand her significance in ancient thought. It will be important to keep in mind that historians and scholars are often uncertain about many details of her life. This is the case not only because there is little direct evidence about her that survived, but also because there have been many contradictory reports about her. There are many legends surrounding the life of Hypatia. These are sometimes "artistically embellished [and] distorted by ideological biases" (Hypatia of Alexandria, p.1).
