Although it’s not practised in Canada, thirty-eight states of America currently use the death penalty as their harshest punishment for crime. Did you know that in the past twenty years one out of six people executed in the United States are later proven innocent? Take Robert Alan Fratta for example. The forty-one year old man who had no criminal record up until April of 1996, was convicted of arranging his wife’s death; he is now sitting on death row in Huntsville Texas, which is the death penalty capital of America. His friends and family desperately work to prove his pleas of innocence. Unless they’re successful, his sentence will be carried out by lethal injection.
Today, ninety countries around the world use the death penalty. If one out of six people are innocent in America, can you imagine how many people are innocent around the world? There are countries that give you the death penalty for crimes such as having a baby before you are married. Like a case in Nigeria.
