G R E N D E L This book opens us with Grendel reflecting on the animals. Grendel�s wants to find out who he truly is in this book. Examining life is the source of Grendel�s Misery. This book is basically a written format of Grendel�s thoughts. Writing from Grendel's perspective, Gardner makes him into an everyman, facing the dread of human existence. While trying to work out who he is and what he should do, he eavesdrops on Hrothgar's hall and is fascinated by Wealtheow and the Shaper. Grendel's Viewpoint is gets more dangerous, to himself and the townspeople: he thinks of reality in terms of conflict. It's him against everybody else, and decides life is just one big accident. There is no God, and there is no point to anything. Therefore, he can follow his urge to kill, without wondering where it comes from. Grendel is a large, frightening monster that lives in a cave near King Hrothgar's castle. Though he looks like a beast, he is in fact intelligent.
