It is important to understand how China was traditionally perceived by the West, as past European attitudes continue to govern and affect society�s view of China today. Two historians share their valid perspectives on these issues. �Knowing the Oriental� (1987) an extract chapter from Edward Said�s book Orientalism discusses ideas such as Western Superiority versus Eastern inferiority, colonialism and imperialism. Raymond Dawson�s article �Western Conceptions of Chinese Civilization� (1963) explores historical European perceptions of China under two categories; that it is either favourable or unfavourable. These perceptions similarly derive from attitudes of Western superiority versus Eastern inferiority and the �East-West divide�. Historically, people tended to view China in one of two extremes; either unqualified condemnation or unadulterated praise.
