Introduction There is a perception that managers are utilitarian in approach and only exist to maximise profits for the benefit of the business and its shareholders. This can often be at the expense of an employee, who loses his or her job in the pursuit of increased profitability. Is this unethical? Surely a measured answer would be based on viewing the circumstances under which this type of manager makes his or her decisions. The James Hardie scandal appears to be an example of unequivocal unethical behaviour but can it be viewed from a different perspective? James Hardie Industries may have absconded to the Netherlands but its CEO claims profits are increasing and the company is in better shape than ever to meet its obligations to asbestos victims in Australia. The argument being that it is more ethical in the circumstances to continue trading and thus ensuring enough revenue to meet its compensatory obligations.
