Spirituality and ceremonial rituals makeup a very important part of the Huichol Indians lives. Today, they can be found in the states of Durango, Zacatecas, Jalisco and Nayarit of Mexico. The Huichol Indians derive from the western central part of Mexico in the barrancas of the Sierra Madre Mountains. Raven black hair, eyes of deep brown and creamy brown skin would describe most of the Huichol Indians. They have broad faces and slightly broad noses and strong bodies. Colorful native dress seems to play an important part in their daily lives instead of opting for more modern clothing. The Huichol as a group tends to be gentle natured, flexible, and humorous. They have avoided warfare against the Spanish and the Mexican government, but have always maintained their traditions and freedoms. They call themselves Wixalika, which means prophets or healers. The Huichol people still follow the age-old shamanic ways of their ancestors. Shamanic basically means that they use a medium to speak to their ancestors.
