Federico Garcia Lorca, a poetic gay man, used his literacy to voice his opinion about the tyrannous government and church in Spain in the late 1930’s. Coming from a middle-class family, Lorca wasn’t politically committed, although he had many left-wing intellectual friends. Lorca had time to finish his forth book before, ironically, the right-wing Falangists captured him with three other men and executed them at dawn.
His final published play was The House of Bernarda Alba, written in 1936, just before the start of the Spanish Civil War. His play mirrors many of the tensions besetting the Spanish society, and the plot also reflects the doomed situation developing and foreshadows what is to come. It focuses on human desire for personal happiness which were violently oppressed by religious beliefs and conventions. We can agree that Camus’s adaptation to the text is rather melodramatic although it still displays Lorca’s mission to reveal the fate of Spanish’s society.
