The Ancient Olympic Games Many sports were played in the Olympic Games. The sports that were played only allowed individual sports, team sports weren�t included in the games. There also no water sports involved in the games. Only Greek citizens were allowed to compete in the games. All the games were intended for men only. Married women were even forbidden to watch the games. Free men, slaves, and young girls were allowed to watch the games. Most of the athletic events in the games were really intended as practice or training for war. The contestants in the Olympic Games were divided into three age groups. Boys were aged from twelve to sixteen, the youths were aged from sixteen to twenty, and the men were from twenty and older. The competitions took place in the stadium and the hippodrome. The Olympic Games were held as a religious, cultural, and a sporting festival in honor of Zeus. The time between two Olympic Games was called an Olympiad.
