Nat Turner was born in Southampton, Virginia in 1800. He was the son of slaves and the property of Benjamin Turner, a prosperous plantation owner. Nat's mother and grandmother had been brought to America from Africa and had a deep hatred for slavery, a view which Nat Turner shared with them. He was taught to read by his master’s son and later developed strong religious beliefs and began to believe that he was put on earth to save his people from slavery and oppression. In 1831 Turner was sold to Joseph Travis. That same year, Nat Turner saw a “sign” in the eclipse and was convinced that it was a message form G-d for him to start an insurrection. However, it wasn’t until August 21, 1831 when Turner and a few friends began a revolt by first killing the Travis family; In all, about 50 whites were killed. They continued going from house to house, killing the white people they encountered. Turner's force eventually consisted of more than 40 slaves, most of them traveling on horseback. Turner had high hopes for his revolt, he hoped that it would cause a huge slave uprise, but only about 7......
