Critical Study of Text: Gwen Harwood - Year 12 2005 Advanced English Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Through reading the article, “Towards the Heart’s True Speech: Voice-conflict in the Poetry of Gwen Harwood”, Elizabeth Lawson illuminates many different reoccurring themes in Gwen Harwood’s poetry giving a greater understanding of her texts. Lawson presents the idea that as a poet, Harwood is often in conflict with which stand she intends to take; be it the moral voice or the satirical voice (often critical of society). After studying the article, I believe that a psychological reading to her poetry is the most apt. One of the main techniques used by Harwood is contrast/juxtaposition and through the use of this technique she delves deep into the idea of the divided self. “Alter Ego” is the most evident of her poems to convey this. Taking a Freudian view of life she argues that psychologically we are separated into two contrasting personas; our ego (conscious self) and our alter ego (subconscious self).
