The Power of Word (Much Ado about Nothing) What does power mean? Is power the ability to own a man, the ability to take will and form it into something meaningful? Is power a device that can end countless numbers of lives on a whim? Or is power the ability to change another person’s opinions and feelings with nothing more than speech? In Shakespeare’s Much Ado about Nothing, several characters are able to enforce their will into other’s mind with a simple tool of a word or two. Shakespeare, through several elements of speech, is able to prove that the “pen” is truly mightier than the sword. One of the first elements used by Shakespeare is sarcasm. Right in the opening scene, Beatrice and Benedick duel back and forth with words. Their barbed comments will come to present an irony later in the play. The substance of the conversation is the proclamation of Benedick that, “it is certain I am lov’d of all ladies, only you excepted; and I would I could find in my heart that I had not a hard heart, for truly I love none” (I.i.124-127).
