The tropical rain forest is found around the equator where temperatures are about 25 degrees Celsius all year, and there is an average rainfall of 200 cm. Portions of South America, Central America, Central Asia, Australia and Africa are included in the biome. The largest rainforests are in the Amazon River Basin (South America), the Congo River Basin (western Africa), and throughout much of southeast Asia. Smaller rainforests are located in Central America, Madagascar, Australia and nearby islands, India, and other locations in the tropics. Tropical rainforests cover only about 7% of the Earth's surface. Because of the humid conditions, this biome has the greatest amount of plant growth. Large trees, such as banyans, wild figs and mahogany form a canopy that prevents much light from reaching the ground. Other plants like bromeliads and lianas live in the canopy. Many of the animals also live in the trees. Bats, squirrels, monkeys, tree frogs and sloths are found here. On the ground there are beetles, spiders, snakes and antelopes.
