By the 1760ˇ¦s, the colonistsˇ¦ identity transformed from dependent British subjects to more self-sufficient American opportunists uniting amidst regional and religious differences to defy the mother land that threatened their expansion and independence. These English men and women endured three thousand miles across the choppy Atlantic Ocean hoping for more food, more wealth, more power, more property, more religious freedom, more justice, more adventure, more brotherly love, or just a more purposeful identity. Many came solely for the chance to start anew in this strange land. Early settlers possessed the ability to adapt European ideas to fit American existence. Within a century most of colonial Americans found themselves living either on Southern plantations, in the New England town, on individual farm collections, or in coastal cities. They thrived internally with a vast supply of agricultural and forest products including tobacco, rice, fish and furs.
